SBOMs Alone Can't Reveal the Scope of a Supply Chain Attack

A recent Shai-Hulud supply chain attack shows that software bills of materials on their own are not enough, and defenders need real-time visibility into production code and affected services to respond effectively, Dark Reading reports.

Software bills of materials (SBOMs) have become a cornerstone of supply chain security programs, but a recent analysis argues they are not sufficient on their own to reveal the true scope of a supply chain compromise, according to Dark Reading.

The report points to the recent Shai-Hulud attack as a case in point. That incident, the publication says, demonstrates a gap between knowing which components an organization uses in theory and understanding what is actually running in production when a compromise unfolds.

According to Dark Reading, SBOMs provide a static inventory of software components, but this snapshot falls short during an active incident. When attackers poison a widely used package or component, defenders need to quickly determine whether the affected code is present in their environment, where it is deployed, and which services depend on it. A static list cannot answer those questions in real time.

The publication argues that organizations instead need real-time visibility into production code and the services affected by a compromise. This kind of live insight allows security teams to trace exposure as it exists at the moment of an attack, rather than relying on inventories that may be outdated or incomplete.

The takeaway, per Dark Reading, is that SBOMs remain a useful tool but should be treated as only one layer of supply chain defense. Pairing them with continuous, runtime-level observation of code and services gives defenders a more accurate picture of their exposure and a faster path to response when the next supply chain attack hits.
